Why choose cloth?
When considering using cloth nappies the most common reasons for switching are environmental impact, financial savings and the fact they are so kind to your baby.
It is no secret that disposable nappies are a large contributor to already congested landfill sites and the situation is only getting worse with the majority of parents choosing the "easy option" without worrying about the long term environmental impact. Washable nappies can save 40% carbon emissions over disposables providing a good wash routine is followed. Reusing the nappies on a second or subsequent child can save even more. The nappies should be washed in a full load at no more than 60ºC and line dried where possible. This also helps to preserve the longevity of the nappy. For optimum washing instructions see our Caring For Cloth page.
Over the time your baby is in nappies they will undergo an average of some 6000 nappy changes. You only have to do the maths to see how much you would be spending on disposables. Added up over a period of time the amount is very substantial. With cloth nappies you need only make an initial investment, much like buying your stroller, car seat or cot and then just add an average of €50 per year for washing. If you buy the minimum amount of nappies needed (around 15-18 for full time use) you will be looking at making a saving of up to and over 1000€ - depending on whether you use premium brands or supermarket own brands - over the course of time your baby is in nappies. If these nappies are then used for a second baby then the savings for that baby are greater still. Many people start out with the premium brand disposables, buying them on offer before the baby is born, and are initially happy. As the baby grows so does the price of the pack for fewer nappies and you start to wonder if it's time to switch to supermarket own brands only to find they leak or just don't fit comfortably. With cloth nappies you can wrap your babies bum in luxury from start to finish. No more compromises. To make these savings even greater we suggest using washable wipes too. Not only are they so much kinder to your babies skin but more effective also. You just pop them in the wash alongside your nappies. Simple!
In choosing cloth nappies you can be sure you are putting only the purest, simplest fabrics next to one of the most sensitive parts of your baby. No additives, chemicals or perfumes. With breathable micro-fleece, the natural antibacterial properties of bamboo and the luxury of organic cotton, what more could you want.
In summary, disposable nappies are just a convenience thing for a throw away society, nothing more. With cloth, a love affair begins! You get to wrap your precious bundle in the most luxurious fabrics, choose how you wash them much like their clothes and more importantly your baby is wearing something reliable and comfortable at last. |
